After 7 years of almost exclusively teaching social studies via a textbook I decided to change my instructional approach this year. Instead I primarily used video clips, picture books, primary resources, narrative nonfiction, magazines, online resources, and informational books along with a (very) small dose of textbooks. The changes I saw in my student's retention (and excitement) of what they were learning was unbelievable!!
